Milestone Anniversary - 11/18/22

Mr. & Mrs. Ed & Irene Vangeloff will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on December 21.  The parish organized an early celebration of this blessed event on Sunday, November 13 prior to the start of the Nativity fast so that V. Rev. Andrew Bartek could celebrate a Church Blessing before his transfer to St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Campbell, Ohio.

Mr. & Mrs. Vangeloff, the two oldest members of Holy Assumption Orthodox Church, were overwhelmed and appreciative of the Church Blessing of their marriage, as well as the potluck social held for them.  Over 60% of the parish joined them in this wonderful celebration.

Holy Synod elects His Grace Bishop Daniel as Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest

BALTIMORE, MD [OCA]

On Monday, July 18, a few hours before the opening of the 20th All-American Council, the Diocese of the Midwest convened a special assembly, under the presidency of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, to consider an episcopal nomination following the falling asleep of Archbishop Paul of blessed memory. The Diocesan assembly nominated His Grace Bishop Daniel of Santa Rosa who has been serving as Locum Tenens of the Diocese over the last few months.

Later that day, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America, meeting in a Special Summer 2022 Session under the presidency of Metropolitan Tikhon, canonically elected Bishop Daniel, formerly Bishop of Santa Rosa and Auxiliary to the Diocese of the West, Bishop of Chicago and the Midwest.

Annual Respect for Life Fundraiser held September 1, 2021

The Annual Respect for Life from the Catholic Churches of Port Clinton and Marblehead, Ohio (ICSJ) Immaculate Conception and St Joseph, held their annual fundraiser September 1, 2021.  Archpriest Andrew Bartek of Holy Assumption Orthodox Church, Marblehead, Ohio is the Orthodox Representative.

This event helps pay for the bus and hotel rooms for the Annual March for Life in Washington, DC held every January. It also helps pay for local billboards for life issues including suicide, euthanasia, drug abuse, pornography, abortion and other life issues. The event was held at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Marblehead on September 1. Approximately 150 people attended from the local churches and communities. The main speaker was actress Sarah Hernandez who starred in the movie “Unplanned” (2019) and “Labor Pains” (2009).  She has also appeared on the TV show of “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and “The Mentalist.” Later this year her new movie “God & Salsa” will air on Hulu or Netflix. This movie is about suicide.

On August 31st Fr. Andrew and the Respect for Life Committee hosted Ms. Hernandez for dinner at a local restaurant. Even though Sarah had other engagements following the event, Fr. Andrew invited her to tour Holy Assumption Orthodox Church where they discussed the history of the parish and Orthodoxy in general.  Sarah was impressed and visited for the better part of an hour.  “I’ve never met such a funny and interesting priest before,” she said.

Fr. Andrew extended an invitation to return in 2023 for the 125th Anniversary of the parish which she indicated to be a possibility.  Photos here.
